Animal Behavior Research Group
                     Information for Prospective Graduate Students

Students interested in animal behavior research who intend to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago have many options available to them. Most faculty members with interests in animal behavior are concentrated in the Committee on Evolutionary Biology. The Committee on Evolutionary Biology is an independent Ph.D.-granting academic unit within the Biological Sciences Division (BSD). We highly recommend it to prospective students with broad interests in biology, ecology or evolution. Opportunities to conduct behavioral research in the BSD are also available in the Department of Ecology and Evolution and the Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy. The Committee on Evolutionary Biology, the Department of Ecology and Evolution, and the Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy are part of the Darwinian Cluster at the University of Chicago. Application procedures are very similar for the three academic units in the Cluster and are often reviewed jointly.

Prospective students who are interested in animal behavior in relation to human behavior should consider applying to the graduate program offered by the Department of Comparative Human Development (Comparative Behavioral Biology program). Research facilities for faculty members and students in the Comparative Behavioral Biology program of the DCHD are available at the Institute for Mind and Biology. The SSD also offers a one-year Master of Art Program in the Social Sciences (MAPSS). Students admitted to MAPSS can be advised by any faculty member in the SSD.

For general questions about animal behavior research opportunities at the University of Chicago, please contact any of the faculty members listed on the Animal Behavior Research Group home page.

Specific information on application procedures is available on the web site of each Department or Committee (see below).
